FUEL/FRIENDS CHAPEL SESSION #28: Desirae Garcia

(From fuelfriendsblog.com)

“I’m strong for my size, but I’m small / …and I don’t want to carry your load anymore,” Desirae Garcia sang these words as her opening lyrics for this chapel session at the La Foret campgrounds during the Meadowgrass Music Festival last year (same day we recorded Dawes). The words are indicative of how effortlessly direct her songs can seem in their simplicity, but one listen will show how those unassuming songs pack a punch through their quiet and insistent assertion.

NATIONALLY LOCAL | The Denver Music Summit 2013

The opening night for the summit included a virtual who’s who of the Denver scene, as some of our city’s best took the stage to collaborate with visiting national acts. Members of The Head and the Heart, Bahamas, and “The Weather Station” teamed up with Ian Cooke, Chimney Choir, and Conor Bourgal in a series of beautiful collaborations. The entire crew of artists spent only 3 hours that day coming up with an 11 song set list to play that night. In spite of a few minor hiccups, every song was filled with the unique character of each performer, and the innovative additions of added instruments and harmonies from new collaborators. It was a testament to each artists talent that they were not only able to put together a cohesive show that quickly, but a damn good one at that.

MARQUEE MAGAZINE: Desirae Garcia, The Haunted Windchimes & UkeFest 2013

Her band may be approaching their upcoming set at Swallow Hill’s 6th annual Denver Ukefest as a normal ‘power set,’ but for The Haunted Windchimes’ ukulele player Desirae Garcia, the pressure is on, as her group’s ambassador of the ukulele.

“Yeah, I definitely feel a little bit of pressure. I’m not exactly a traditional ukulele player. I don’t really know anything about the ukulele. Like, I call it a ukulele [yoo-ka-lay-lee], which is a perfect example. They all call it a ukulele [ook-koo-le-le],” Garcia laughed, during a recent phone interview with The Marquee.

STEAL THIS TRACK: JOE JOHNSON - "ROLL BACK MUDDY WATER."

333

The track is found on Johnson’s LP “New West Sound,” which will be released Sept. 14 with a show at the Ivywild School in Colorado Springs. The album is on Blank Tape Records, a Pueblo record label that, while only five years old, releases the best of Colorado Americana, including The Haunted Windchimes and Grant Sabin. Fans of blues, country and bluegrass will fall in love with Johnson’s solid songwriting and rich, outlaw-country vocals. Do give the album a full listen. “Roll Back Muddy Water” is a little ditty compared to the other tracks. Inaiah Lujan of The Haunted Windchimes gets a production credit, and the production and arrangements of these songs are world-class. It’s truly a gorgeous, moving release perfect for days like today.

GRANT SABIN'S ANTHROMUSICOLOGY AWARDED ALBUM OF THE YEAR! (CSINDY AWARDS)

2222

In the last decade, Grant Sabin has covered a lot of ground. He started playing out at age 13, went through the blues prodigy's obligatory Robert Johnson phase, and has since developed his own idiosyncratic style that's well-represented on last December'sAnthromusicology album.

In addition to being Sabin's most fully realized recording, Anthromusicologybridged local music communities. Released on the Haunted Windchimes' Blank Tape Records label, it finds him collaborating with We Are Not a Glum Lot guitarist Sam Erickson, Briffaut frontman Daniel James Eaton, and drummer-about-town Alex Koshak, who combine their musical talents and taste for cosmic surrealism in the Kings of Space collective.

THE HAUNTED WINDCHIMES AWARDED BEST IN FOLK FOR THE 3RD YEAR IN A ROW (CSINDY AWARDS 2013)

1111

'It all blurs together after a while," says Inaiah Lujan, trying to remember whether the Haunted Windchimes' appearance on A Prairie Home Companion was last year or the year before.

For the record, it was in October 2011. The group has since released its sixth album and played around town in an ever-changing array of side projects. Perhaps most importantly, the group has also toured almost constantly, and that's allowed them, or required them, actually, to give up their day jobs.

MIKE CLARK: DAYTROTTER SESSION!

88(from daytrotter.com)

Colorado songwriter Mike Clark writes songs that sound sweeter than sour. They give off the feeling that his love is healthy, but it's still so damned hungry. It's blazing and demanding. He gives off that pacing the floor, screaming at the skies neediness vibe that the greatest of the old school soul and blues singers gave off, as if there was nothing else than some soft touch to be had. It was all there was. It was everything that was and is needed. They'll be wayward until they fill that yearning. They'll be wayward for a while.

MAD MACKEREL (UK BLOG): THE CHANGING COLORS - JOAN & THE KING

999

"Sometimes it takes just one play, one single spin, to know you’ve found something to treasure."

So it is with Changing Colors and the track Good Times from their new album Joan & The King, which sees a release via Blank Tape Records. From the opening lazy strum of guitar and gently hypnotic percussion to the perfect, world-weary vocals of frontman Conor Bourgal, the song meanders slowly and surely to its destination over a simple refrain, “I am a mess of a man“. This is haunted, melancholy Americana at its very best.

Mike Clark's "Smooth Sailing" featured on Fuel/Friends Summer Mix 2012

11

(from fuelfriendsblog.com)

One quiet night in May, my friend Conor played me this demo that local treasure Mike Clark had just recorded earlier in the week. There in the darkness, I completely fell in love with this song and everything about it and what I want my summer to sound like. Lazy, appreciative, and unhurried. I turned to Conor as we laid there, and said “Um, I know how my summer mix is starting this year.”

Mike Clark's "Hey Daisy" reaches 10,000 views!

Voted "Most impressive music video of 2011" by the A.V. Club

Mike Clark of The Haunted Windchimes and The Ghost Of Michael Clark made a video in which he rides a bike. While it may not sound impressive at first, he’s also strumming his guitar and singing his song “Hey Daisy.” The video was shot in one take on Tehon St. in Colorado Springs, and the song’s bluesy tone really grabs the listener even as Clark is rolling down the street in the Colorado sunshine.

The Changing Colors: Fuel / Friends Chapel Sessions #6

4

(From FuelFriendsBlog.com)

There is a sweet intuition in watching brothers playing or sisters singing together. Some of that familial DNA seems to weave its way through the verses, the octave changes and the rhythm shifts. When my sister and I sing together, it’s like singing with myself but in stereo. Watching Colorado Springs’ Conor and Ian Bourgal of The Changing Colors play together, it’s as if one person splintered into two – a river of fraternal goodness.
